Full Description:
A presentation of his family history by Lord Petre given to members of the Stock & Buttsbury Heritage Society on 29th November 2007. From farmers and tanners on the edge of Dartmoor pre 16th century to Secretary of State by 1544, entwined with religion changes throughout Tudor times, he details the path of a family that exists today. The source of wealth and land ownership of a Catholic family in anti Papist times is intriguing. Involved in the Dissolution of the Monasteries the then Lord Petre was able to amass a fortune of many estates comprising 1000's of acres including Thorndon Hall having 2700 acres. 17th century laws against Catholics, the repeal of the Corn Laws changed the fortunes of the Petre family necessitating sale of land and letting to many tenants of Scottish origin. Later, Death Duties further reduced the Petre's wealth. Today the total estate is about 5% of what it was. The video lasts 1hour 10 minutes. There is slight sound interference in places and sometimes keeps returning to the start after a few minutes.
