Item ID: 466

Approx Year: 2011

Full Description:
This talk given to members of S&BHS on 8th December 2011 on Maldon's development from Neolithic to Anglo-Saxon times to 12th century Leper Hospital and Carmelite Friary and the first mention of the quay and Maldon's famous salt were enthusiastically told. Maldon was known for "The fat man of Maldon" who weighted 44stone, had a 5'6" waist and died aged 29 and the Reverend Billio who was known for delivering rapid sermons hence "speaking like Billio". Like many villages and towns large parts were rebuilt after fires as happened around Market Hill. Maldon has links with nearby Heybridge. The history of the 14 acre Promenade and route through to Beeleigh Abbey was given. Much more interesting information was presented.
